Changed VAT on Takeaway – Guide for April 1

What happens on April 1?

Starting April 1, 2026, a temporary reduction of VAT on food from 12% to 6% is proposed. The reduction applies until December 31, 2027 and introduces an important change for restaurants that offer takeaway.

The change means that food items will have 6% VAT, while restaurant and catering services will continue to be taxed at 12%. Previously, the same VAT rate applied to both, but now a clearer distinction is introduced.

Takeaway / food to-go is classified as food and therefore falls under the lower VAT rate during this period, while dining on-site is considered a restaurant service and keeps the 12% VAT.

What does this mean?

For businesses that offer both dine-in service and takeaway, this means that pricing and POS settings need to be reviewed to ensure correct VAT handling.

Instruction: How to add takeaway VAT and takeaway prices in Caspeco POS

Follow the steps below to activate and configure takeaway VAT and takeaway prices in the POS system.

1. Log in to Caspeco

Open rms.caspeco.se in your browser.
Navigate to POS for the company you want to administer.

2. Open Locations

Select “Locations” in the left-hand menu.

3. Go to POS Settings

Click “Configurations”.
Then select “POS Settings”.
Now the option to add takeaway VAT and takeaway prices is enabled in your menu.

4. Update your items

Go to the menu.
Select the items you want to add takeaway prices and takeaway VAT for.

This can be done:

• Item by item, or

• By selecting multiple items in the list view and then choosing “Edit”.

Note:

If you do not have an accounting account for 6% VAT:
Go to Accounting under the Accounting tab and add the account there before continuing.

Important if you use master → substructure

If you work with a master menu that synchronizes with submenus, this change can be synchronized to all menus after you make the update in the master menu.

This saves time and ensures that the same takeaway settings apply across the entire structure.

5. Restart the POS terminals

Restart all POS terminals for the changes to take effect.

Once the POS terminals restart, the items will follow the new settings when you press “Takeaway” in the POS.
